Reverse Pedagogy is the result of an artist residency with nine diverse artists. All artists were invited to live in Sligo for up to two weeks and to work collaboratively to build an exhibition with no particular plan previous to their arrival. The project, the third chapter in its ongoing manifestation, was previously produced at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, and at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
This third chapter of Reverse Pedagogy is guided by its founder Paul Butler (Canada) and Mark Garry (Ireland). For each version of Reverse Pedagogy, Butler recruits another artist to co-organize the project’s focus in an effort to keep it collective and fresh. In his words, “our job is to design a platform that is ideal for creativity, collaboration & experimentation.”
In this project, artists are encouraged to challenge their own patterns of artistic thought and production, and to explore new directions in their art practice. Paul Butler conceives of Reverse Pedagogy as a “sanctuary from the pressures and responsibilities that come with being a professional artist.” The goal is lateral learning through the exchange of ideas, energy and example. As participants, all artists are both teachers and students in this collectively directed, nomadic experimental school.
On Culture Night, artists and public will be interacting together creatively.

A colourful and vibrant exhibition of paintings by a group of artists in long-term care at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar. The exhibition is the latest in a series resulting from a groundbreaking scheme initiated by Mayo County Council in 1999 with artist Deirdre Walsh, an initiative now supported by the HSE. The project has enabled and empowered many long term residential service users over the years. The scheme is currently facilitated by artist Tom Meskell. As Deirdre observes, “Age or infirmity does not hinder creativity.” Come along and see how right she is.

Open Mon-Fri: 10am-5.00pm; sat: 11am-5.30pm
An exhibition of drawing, printmaking text and collage. According to the artist: “my current work is an attempt as a visual artist to interpret, track, record and acknowledge the experience and impact of chronic illness within the family unit. By referencing the language of maps, plans, geometry, visual puzzles and graphic constructs, intersected and overlaid with drawn suggestions of organic matter and accumulated marks, I explore the interplay of quasi-formal systems with more human gestural and random image making. Instinctively, these works start small and concentrated but often move into larger formats. Work that begins on the wall starts to shift from 2D into relief, from collage into bricolage, thus blurring the distinction between drawing and installation.”

Niki Purcell
Sea Change - IN THE FOYER GALLERY
Expressionism is an artistic style in which the artist attempts to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in them. This is accomplished through distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, and fantasy and through the vivid, jarring, violent, or dynamic application of formal elements. In a broader sense Expressionism is one of the main currents of art in the later 19th and the 20th centuries, and its qualities of highly subjective, personal, spontaneous self-expression are typical of a wide range of modern artists and art movements. This is also typical of the work of Niki Purcell, whose work is inspired by the forces and wonder of nature, they house the elements and magic of the world that she experiences, the works are meant to excite the imagination. All works for sale. Niki holds a B.A (Honours) degree in Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.

inside and outside the gallery space. The exhibition is curated by Pádraic E.Moore.

In the RHA’s new atrium John Kindness has been invited to show “Night Canvass” 1987. This large work, 600cms X 244cms, depicts a front door assassination in Belfast. It was originally created for the exhibition Indirections curated Brian McAvera and Patrick T. Murphy at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 1987. The exhibition combined artists from Northern Ireland whose work directly addressed the Troubles. Kindness completed the work in the DHG during the run of the show.
Closes 20 December.
Please see www.royalhibernianacademy.ie for further details.
A new body of photography work by Mary Kelly, will feature in the RHA Foyer. The artist was prompted by the ubiquitous imagery of the mother and child in Western Art to look at creating works that deal with the father and child relationship. The corporeal attachment between a mother and child is fundamentally established during gestation in the woman’s body but how does the male embody his bond with the child? Kelly’s seeking out of individuals who has tattooed their bodies with the names and images of their children opens up a range of issues for us to consider.
The RHA Foyer features new work by artist’s that have had a one-person exhibition at the RHA in the past decade.
Closes 20 December.
Please see www.royalhibernianacademy.ie for further details.
The Dr. Tony Ryan Gallery will feature a selection of Landscape painting from the RHA’s Collection chosen by the RHA Keeper, Donald Teskey, where you can view work by Tony O’Malley HRHA, Veronica Bolay RHA, T.P. Flanagan RHA, Eithne Jordan RHA and Fergus O’Ryan RHA, Eric Patton RHA, Liam Belton RHA and a recent work donated to the collection by Maria Simmonds-Gooding ARHA alongside a work, dated 1796, by the first President of the RHA, William Ashford PPRHA.

Pendulum- Laubrock/Rainey/Guilfoyle/Buckley
Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock is among the most creative spirits to emerge from London’s F-ire collective, and her career is gathering considerable momentum as word gets around about her brilliantly inventive playing and intelligent compositions that straddle free and metered idioms with real purpose and confidence. Eschewing any histrionics or grandstanding, Tom Rainey’s approach to the drums is both deeply musical and rhythmically engrossing, and he’s enjoyed a prolific output with many of NYC’s emblematic groups of the last two decades, from the early days of the downtown scene with New and Used to his current role in groups like Tim Berne’s Big Satan and the Fred Hersch Trio. They’re joined by saxophonist Michael Buckley and bassist Ronan Guilfoyle and together they’ll be a formidable unit on an evening of individual virtuosity and intense contemporary swing.
The Sundays at Noon concerts return to the Hugh Lane on October 11th. Now in its 34th year, this series is a Sunday morning institution. Funded by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council these free concerts promote the best of Irish and international music and musicians. See www.hughlane.ie for information on ongoing exhibitions and other activities at the Gallery. The concerts will continue until Dec 20th.
